Product Details

This extraordinary antique artwork by the acclaimed artist Jean-Jacques Pradier (commonly known as James Pradier) depicts Dagon, the ancient deity revered in Mesopotamian and Philistine mythology. Dagon is often represented as a half-man, half-fish figure, symbolizing his dual dominion over the earth and sea, as well as his association with fertility and abundance.

In this illustration, Dagon is seen holding a three-tiered ceremonial object, interpreted as a symbol of agricultural prosperity or ritual offerings, and a wand or rod in his other hand, denoting divine authority and spiritual power.

Jean-Jacques Pradier (1790–1852) was a renowned Swiss-born French artist, celebrated for his neoclassical sculptures and illustrations. After winning the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1813, Pradier studied at the French Academy in Rome, where he developed a deep admiration for the classical art of antiquity. His works often drew inspiration from ancient mythology, blending technical precision with a Romantic aesthetic.

Pradier gained widespread recognition for his sculptures adorning some of France's most iconic landmarks, such as the bronze Victory figures for the Arc de Triomphe and his marble works at the Palais Bourbon. Although primarily a sculptor, Pradier’s skill as a draftsman is evident in this artwork, which demonstrates his mastery of detail and his ability to capture the essence of mythological figures. This rare piece exemplifies Pradier’s profound understanding of classical mythology and his dedication to fine craftsmanship.

The finely scaled texture of Dagon’s fish-like body, his serene yet authoritative expression, and the delicate use of color all showcase Pradier’s artistic finesse. Encased in an elegant gilded wooden frame with a warm yellow mat, this artwork is a stunning example of 19th-century mythological art, ideal for collectors and enthusiasts of ancient iconography.

This depiction of Dagon is a timeless work of art that seamlessly combines historical mythology with Pradier’s exceptional artistic talent, making it a standout addition to any collection.
